Description: Magical species must never mix. According to the rules, Simon Osborne should ignore the children’s cries for help. After all, they’re werewolf cubs, and he’s an apprentice mage. But for once in his life, Simon breaks the rules and rescues the cubs, saving them from a demon intent on draining them of their magic.

Of course, all actions have consequences, and Simon’s bold move earns him the displeasure of his peers and the attention of the cubs’ alpha, a man named Gray Townsend.

The last thing Gray needs is a mage in his life, but Simon did save his son. Since Simon is now a friend of the pack, Gray doesn’t have much choice about it—or the forbidden attraction that goes along with it. Unfortunately for the alpha, he needs Simon’s help to track down the demon behind the kidnappings—before it strikes again. Simon and Gray must join forces to protect the pack, even as they struggle to resist the temptation that threatens to destroy them both.

Review: Simon Osborne is faced with a decision that will change the course of his life forever in Poppy Dennison’s novel “Mind Magic.” Simone Osborne is an apprentice mage working hard to achieve mage status. When the kidnapping of a small group of werewolf cubs changes Simon’s path he begins questioning everything he has been taught. Simon is a clever apprentice and is able to get the cubs back home but that is only the beginning.

Gray Townsend, the werewolf alpha, is instantly drawn to the young mage but as the alpha he isn’t so sure he can trust Simon. But Simon has been made a friend of the pack and deserves protection. Gray quickly realizes that Simon is his mate and the draw to the apprentice mage is becoming harder to resist.

From the moment the book firsts starts I was instantly pulled into Simon’s side of the story in hopes that he would save the werecubs even though it was against the magical world rules. Simon Osborne is one clever mage to get those kids out. Gray is a strong and protective alpha who is determined to get to the bottom of the cub kidnappings and destroy the demon responsible.

Poppy Dennison has written a thrilling story of romance and suspense on a paranormal world where different types of magic do not mix. She makes us face the tragedy of judgement on others before we even know their intentions.

Mind Magic is one of those books that offers a heart-felt story of learning to trust when the world has told you to look the other way. I recommend this book to anyone who want a romantic book filled with danger.

Stasis is a state which only the worst prisoners are put into as suspended animation for the duration of a time, a sentence until they are forgotten. They are then released only to become bond slaves.

Ennek is the son of the Chief, ruler in Praesidium. He is not the heir so there not much is expected from Ennek. He lives brushing the outskirts of the law especially because he is attracted to men, something not permitted in Praesidium. Ennek has nightmares that are becoming worse, especially when he discovers a prisoner, Miner, in stasis and feels an instant connection. But is Ennek’s need enough to save Miner?

Kim Fielding has created world where class is all that matters but love knows no bounds. She creates characters and a story that makes you want to stand up for what you believe in no matter the cost. This story is told through the third person from Ennek’s point of view. Her writing lets you feel what you want toward the injustice of the reluctant hero and his prisoner/slave without telling you how to feel.

The characters are skillfully crafted with mysticism and uniqueness each pulling Ennek and his values in a thousand different directions. I loved this book, the story line was unique and covered many serious political issues without being pushy.

I highly recommend this book to anyone. This isn’t just a romance book, as a matter of fact the romance is more of a cherry on top of a deep story filled with mystery and intrigue that left me wanting more. I cannot wait to read Flux, the next book in the trilogy!

Believability in Characters

Man with MagicStories need to have believability in the magic created for characters. I don’t like books where characters suddenly realize she or he has a power, such as a character suddenly realizing she always had the power to turn her enemies into toads with just a thought at the end of a book to solve the final conflict. The story is now unbelievable, like the author suddenly realized they put their characters into a situation she couldn’t get out of so the magical wizard suddenly finds her power. I find myself asking, “Where did that just come from?” and scanning back in the book to find what I missed.

On the other hand I don’t mind characters that are growing with their power. If the hero starts with only being able to start a soft breeze and by the end of the book he can create a hurricane, that works too. Just as long as the readers get to see the character grow and change with their new found abilities.

The heroines and heroes of my favorite stories have to have limits, if they don’t why is the antagonist even a threat? I have read a few stories where the heroes or heroines are near impossible to harm or even kill and I found myself wondering, “Why don’t they just rule the world?” I mean obviously no one can even touch them. I like limits, I can relate to characters with limits and people who have to make sacrifices for the things they want. This also creates conflict which is essential to any good story.

A great way to create limits is the source for power and magic. The source needs to be believable such as a genie who can only grant three wishes or blood as the sacrifice for more power. With limits the characters have to think before they leap. Plus this gives us romantics a way to spice up our stories, what better way to say I love you then having the main character sacrifice everything for the man he loves?

Also think about instruments needed for magic such as wands or ingredients like salt or herbs. If a mage needs to have a wand or a dove’s feather to perform magic there is a limit to the power giving him or her a weakness and believability.

So create those rules, make your characters vulnerable, and keep writing!

Then grab your wands and join Tal O’Duirwood and Alexander Carlson to save Yellow Sky, Texas from the vampires and werewolves threatening to destroy the city.

Tal is sent to Yellow Sky to see if Geraldine Beggay and her students are ready to be a part of the Coalition of Magical Creatures. The Coalition was put in place to keep magical creatures like vampires, shifters, witches, fairies, and dragons out of the public’s eye. Anyone who threatened to exposed them was assassinated, which is why Tal is sent to see if Geraldine and her students could handle the vampire situation taking place in Yellow Sky.

Independent author A.M. Burns takes us into the fantasy world where mages rule the elements in both the light and dark sides of magic. The story is told in first person from our main character Tal. He has an instant interest in Alexander when he first sees him in the magic shop in Yellow Sky. The book follows their adventure to save the city from the infestation of werewolves, wererats, and vampires who threaten to expose the magical creatures to the world.

Tal is nearly impossible to kill and we find that his only weakness might be Alexander. Fantasy readers may find this story of interest as this tale isn’t just focused on romance, although the story does focus on Tal and Alexander the main story is finding a way to stop the weres and vampires from taking over the city. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a fantasy story with m/m romance interests.
