Description: Brute leads a lonely life in a world where magic is commonplace. He is seven and a half feet of ugly, and of disreputable descent. No one, including Brute, expects him to be more than a laborer. But heroes come in all shapes and sizes, and when he is maimed while rescuing a prince, Brute’s life changes abruptly. He is summoned to serve at the palace in Tellomer as a guard for a single prisoner. It sounds easy but turns out to be the challenge of his life.
Rumors say the prisoner, Gray Leynham, is a witch and a traitor. What is certain is that he has spent years in misery: blind, chained, and rendered nearly mute by an extreme stutter. And he dreams of people’s deaths—dreams that come true.
As Brute becomes accustomed to palace life and gets to know Gray, he discovers his own worth, first as a friend and a man and then as a lover. But Brute also learns heroes sometimes face difficult choices and that doing what is right can bring danger of its own.
Review: Brute has been an outcast most of his life. When his parents died at a young age he was taken in by an abusive uncle who didn't want him. When his uncle died he was treated even worse by the townspeople who didn't really know what to do with an ugly giant. He did the work of ten men in his work in labor but a visit from a prince changes his life forever. He becomes a lone guard for a witch and traitor who has dreams of people's deaths. Brute soon learns to be a friend and lover as the people of the palace easily accept him.
Kim Fielding is a brilliant writer who brings us another story of finding love in the most unusual places. Brute is one of the most unique characters I have ever read and his size and ugliness only make him stronger. I find it rare to read romance stories where the two main characters aren't attractive in almost every way and yet Fielding has us fall in love with Brute no matter what he looks like, proving looks can be deceiving and the most important things are on the inside. Her style is diverse and eclectic as she instantly pulls you into the world of a gentle giant.
Brute has a heart bigger than any ordinary man's. He is surprisingly tender and humble despite everything he has gone through. My favorite quote from the book is said by Gray Leynaham, “You're' a giant because an ordinary man's body is too small for what you are.” I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a fairy tale of a giant who should go down in the history books as a classic.

Stasis is a state which only the worst prisoners are put into as suspended animation for the duration of a time, a sentence until they are forgotten. They are then released only to become bond slaves.
Ennek is the son of the Chief, ruler in Praesidium. He is not the heir so there not much is expected from Ennek. He lives brushing the outskirts of the law especially because he is attracted to men, something not permitted in Praesidium. Ennek has nightmares that are becoming worse, especially when he discovers a prisoner, Miner, in stasis and feels an instant connection. But is Ennek’s need enough to save Miner?
Kim Fielding has created world where class is all that matters but love knows no bounds. She creates characters and a story that makes you want to stand up for what you believe in no matter the cost. This story is told through the third person from Ennek’s point of view. Her writing lets you feel what you want toward the injustice of the reluctant hero and his prisoner/slave without telling you how to feel.
The characters are skillfully crafted with mysticism and uniqueness each pulling Ennek and his values in a thousand different directions. I loved this book, the story line was unique and covered many serious political issues without being pushy.
I highly recommend this book to anyone. This isn’t just a romance book, as a matter of fact the romance is more of a cherry on top of a deep story filled with mystery and intrigue that left me wanting more. I cannot wait to read Flux, the next book in the trilogy!
