One of the biggest struggles in becoming an author is finding your voice. I have read several articles and books that claim beginning authors are the worst at having an individual voice. Many amateur authors tend to write like his or her favorite authors and in this case tread on the dangerous ground of plagiarism.
First, when writing, we need to remember to be ourselves. We are unique in the way we write. Find your passion and write in it, the stories and ideas are inside you just get them down on paper.
Write what you know, at least at first. This is the information age and data is available for all types of research. We don’t always have to write what we know but when you practice writing think of experiences you have had personally. This way it’s easier to come up with descriptions and feelings that you already explored. This is a great exercise to find your voice.
Write with a passion. It is hard to write from the heart, especially when we know that the heartfelt writing is going to be criticized and edited. In a way it feels like our heart is being judged but writing what we feel most passionate about comes through on the page. Write in the dark worlds of paranormal and horror and create characters not everyone will like, after all, we all have a dark side. 🙂
Don’t stay comfortable, take those risks. Push past your limits and feel what you write. Never stay comfortable just being on the middle ground, face your fears and become a stronger writer.
Remember that nothing you write is a waste. Consider it experience no matter how small. It’s okay to suck 🙂
So scream yourself on the page and keep writing!
