Believability in Characters

Man with MagicStories need to have believability in the magic created for characters. I don’t like books where characters suddenly realize she or he has a power, such as a character suddenly realizing she always had the power to turn her enemies into toads with just a thought at the end of a book to solve the final conflict. The story is now unbelievable, like the author suddenly realized they put their characters into a situation she couldn’t get out of so the magical wizard suddenly finds her power. I find myself asking, “Where did that just come from?” and scanning back in the book to find what I missed.

On the other hand I don’t mind characters that are growing with their power. If the hero starts with only being able to start a soft breeze and by the end of the book he can create a hurricane, that works too. Just as long as the readers get to see the character grow and change with their new found abilities.

The heroines and heroes of my favorite stories have to have limits, if they don’t why is the antagonist even a threat? I have read a few stories where the heroes or heroines are near impossible to harm or even kill and I found myself wondering, “Why don’t they just rule the world?” I mean obviously no one can even touch them. I like limits, I can relate to characters with limits and people who have to make sacrifices for the things they want. This also creates conflict which is essential to any good story.

A great way to create limits is the source for power and magic. The source needs to be believable such as a genie who can only grant three wishes or blood as the sacrifice for more power. With limits the characters have to think before they leap. Plus this gives us romantics a way to spice up our stories, what better way to say I love you then having the main character sacrifice everything for the man he loves?

Also think about instruments needed for magic such as wands or ingredients like salt or herbs. If a mage needs to have a wand or a dove’s feather to perform magic there is a limit to the power giving him or her a weakness and believability.

So create those rules, make your characters vulnerable, and keep writing!

Fate’s Second Chance by A.J. Jarrett

Fate's Second Chance

Romance Level: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Have you ever felt out of place or like you were living someone else’s life? Well, fate may have just made a mistake. For Marie Carter that mistake may give her a second chance at life.

When taking an early flight home she realized that she was never going to see her sister, Serena, or her best friend, Shawn ever again as the plane crashes down. But her forgetful and boundary crossing angel, Ross has different plans for her. He is throwing her back into life as Marc Carter with the male body she was suppose to have and one chance to win the heart of the man she loves, or I guess now he loves. This story is told from the first person from Marie/Marc Carter’s point of view.

I’m not going to lie, I went into this book hesitant with the thought that a girl coming back as a man was kind of a strange plot but I was wrong, this story was an absolute delight to read. I ended up biting my nails through the entire story, (which was a habit I have been trying to break and this book did not help). I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see if Marc could get Shawn to say I love you.

Author A.J. Jarrett had me laughing and crying with Marc as he fumbled his way through his new life with the mistake making angel, Ross, to help win over Shawn’s heart. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a great read with powerful characters and a great storyline.

This post is great and has great writing information and inspiration! So stress less and write more!

Kristen Lamb's Blog

Writers are no strangers to stress. Many of us work full-time day jobs and write, or we balance a family and write, or we balance a family, a day job, and school, and write. There is just so much to keep up with, and few of us are blessed enough to have a secret lab with a death ray that will vaporize intruders….though I’m still saving. Frequently, writers will whine say, “But I just don’t have tiiiime. Writing and work and blogging and social media. There isn’t enough tiiiiiiime.”

Granted, all of us are spread thinly, but the thing is we have the same 24 hours as everyone else. Often we DO have the time, we just lack focus. We don’t have a time management conflict, we have a values conflict. Very often we have plenty of time, we just have values or beliefs or weaknesses that are devouring our…

Dedicated writing time…or Facebook time?

Heart BookIt’s writing Wednesday and I have dedicated writing time…which often is spent on Facebook…or my favorite authors websites…or just surfing the internet. Damn those distractions!

Grrr…don’t you just hate distractions?!

So here are ten tips for dedicated writing time:

  1. Shut off your phone, shut off the internet. These are just distractions and you will not need them to write. Grab an old fashioned dictionary and thesaurus if you really need one.
  2. Do a meditation before to clear your thoughts.
  3. Eat before you start so you don’t get distracted by that growling tummy half way through the writing session. And keep a drink next to you but away from the electronics. 🙂
  4. Get comfortable. If you are not comfortable you will not be focused on writing but focused your body’s complaints.
  5. Find a clean space that is distraction free. A clean desk is a clean mind…wait do we really want that for romance? Yes, you do! You want to keep your eyes on the computer or pen and paper not playing with the Rubik’s cube that just happened to be laying next to you. 🙂
  6. Set up a timer. This is a great idea for my speed writers who like to see if they can keep writing for quick-short periods of time to reach a specific word count. You can also simply just use your phone timer and set it for short periods of time (usually around 30 minutes). Once the timer goes off, stop writing and reward yourself with a goal accomplished (like visiting this blog ;)) or give yourself a punishment like 20 push-ups for not writing the entire 30 minutes or not meeting the word count. A great website and even app on the iPad is Write or Die! (http://writeordie.com/) This app and website tracks your words and time to get you to keep writing.
  7. Another great trick I use is headphones. I usually like listening to score when I write but even if you don’t listen to music I have found that people are a lot less likely to disturb me if I have headphones on.
  8. Don’t edit your novel until it is finished. This is probably one of the hardest ones for me to follow. I find myself going back and fixing sentences and descriptions all the time. Don’t! Edit your work when the story is finished, for now just get the story on the screen or on paper.
  9. Write daily! Make it a habit to write everyday even if it is not for the novel, just keep those keyboards and pens moving for inspiration. Another great practice to keep going is stream-of-consciousness writing, this helps focus thoughts especially in creating new worlds. You can also create a word count quota for everyday, this keeps you writing until the novel is done. Just 1,667 word per day is a 50K novel in 30 days!
  10. Have fun! Don’t forget that this is about writing for yourself and no one else. Even if we never get published it’s always important to remember that when we finish a novel or short story we have accomplished something. So reward yourself for every goal, no matter how small, achieved!

So bring out those computers, tablets, pens, and paper and start writing. Keep going and don’t give up! I have faith that all of us can get published because all of us have a story to tell. 🙂
