Romance Level: @@@
Jamie Craig intwines a world of the two different characters Aleron Pitre, a thief and prisoner, with Jasak, head prison guard and an Athaki. The Athaki are a race of hunters from the planet Belenia who use fangs and claws, which are both retractible, to hunt their prey. The narration in this book paints a wicked picture that places you in the gloomy world of the prison planet, Tantoret.
I instantly took to the character Aleron Pitre, rooting for him to survive, find a way of the planet, and learn to trust someone else, since he has only looked out for himself up until now. Aleron finds himself being dumped on a dead planet with the only other occupants being prisoners and especially strong Athaki prison guards. In an effort to save himself and Jasak he ends up under the protection of the head prison guard. This is only the beginning.
The story mostly follows the two main characters, Aleron and Jasak but other character point of views come into play as we discover Tantoret is slowly unraveling with the need for control. Jamie Craig’s attention to detail leaves you with no question that this planet is hell and this is where prisoners come to only to die.
I recommend this book to any fan who can appreciate finding love in all the dark places.
